«I've never actually had any choreographic ideas, but I think while I'm rehearsing. Dance is a specific practice allowing for a number of bodies to work together. It presupposes routine activities leading to familiarity with materials, combines different ways of moving in the world and allows for the invention of deviations, short cuts and detours. In societies that are changing – because of globalisation, immigration, neoliberalism, climate change – and in which everything – capacity for work, appearance, origin, gender – has become exploitable, dance too is being transformed. Going with the momentum of my own shifting orientations, I've tried to take a broader view of these phenomena via a portrait of a city, Aubervilliers, and the practices of its residents.
We ran a survey lasting eight months in the municipality and collected three hundred practices – professional and amateur, ordinary and out of the ordinary – which we brought together and published as Portraits d'Aubervilliers, a book you can read, borrow, forget, buy, give as a gift, lose and find again. In the book you roam a landscape of acts and habits – invisible, social or private – that between them make up a city. In my dance piece Portraits Choisis (Selected Portraits) I engage in an intimate relationship between myself and the bodies of the people I encountered. I integrate their actions, experience the desires and the emptiness that drive them, and interconnect their practices. I explore the place where individuals construct themselves, organising both their emancipation and their own exploitation. And in the video Portrait|7 : Maryse Emel I recount a day's work in the studio with Maryse, a philosopher and an inhabitant of Aubervilliers».
