Joachim Scharloth is a full professor of Applied Linguistics at Dresden University of Technology, Germany. His most recent book focussed on the performative aspects of the communication of the 1968s in Germany. He was one of the leaders of the EU-financed research project "European Protest Movements since the Cold War" (2006-2010) and is the editor of several volumes on cultural aspects of social movements. His current research is centered around the drawbacks and opportunities of communication in the digital age, text mining and identity in the era of big data. Prior stages of his career include Dokkyo University in Tokyo (2009-2012), University of Freiburg (2007-2008) and Zurich University (2002-2009).
