entrée du personnel

"Sortie de l'usine Lumière" #2 (Leaving the Lumière factory): second cinema workshop open to all entitled “Sortie de l'usine Lumière”, to discuss through cinema the relationships between “art and work”; it involves, in preparation of the Printemps des Laboratoires #2 dedicated to that issue, monthly screenings of films and artists’ videos dealing with how work is represented in general and how the work of art is represented in particular.
With movie Entrée du personnel by Manuela Frésil (2011), put in relation during the evening with some of Alain Cavalier's 24 portraits. Employees at an abattoir and meatpacking plant on the margins of a semi-industrial French city talk about working conditions, their daily lives, and why and how they got there in the first place. In spite of the highly charged subject, the camera maintains a distance, imparting a sort of elusive beauty and pathos. A formal experiment in documentary style, Entrée du personnel (Staff Entrance) delves into the heart of a working-class milieu, while presenting a twist on an age-old topic. (Manuela Frésil, 2011, HDCam, French with subtitles, 59 minutes).
