My name is Bettina Atala, and I was born in Saintes, France in 1977.

I very much enjoyed going to elementary school, to junior high, and then to high school. I practised a variety of activities, such as rock climbing, kayaking, or acting at the youth center in Caen. I would often go to the cinema, mostly to the Lux, which was close to my house. I passed my final high school exam (the Baccalauréat) on my first try in 1995. It is around this time that I left for Paris to register at the university. I spent my time in bars, exhibitions, and in libraries. I failed the entrance exam to a film school in Brussels twice. I then became a dishwasher in the university restaurant, then later a letter carrier in Paris' 11th arrondissement. At the beginning of the century, I got a B.A. in Cinema.

Not long afterwards, I met Grand Magasin (Pascale Murtin, François Hiffler). We received a grant to go to Japan, so I took a plane owned by the company Japan Airlines in order to reach the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. There, we shot several films and frenetically used public transportation. Once back in France, we created 5 shows together: Can You See What I See?, 0 Out Of 1 Task(s) Have Been Performed Correctly, View With Commentary, 5th International Forum Of Corporate Cinema and The Resurfacing Problem, which we showed at the Pompidou Center, the Fondation Cartier in Paris, the CAPC de Bordeaux, the Lyon Biennal of Contemporary Art, the Kunstenfestival in Brussels, St. Ann's Warehouse in New York City, the Schouwburg in Rotterdam, the Festival d'Avignon, the Printemps de Septembre in Toulouse, the Carrefour international du Théâtre de Québec in Quebec City, the Oerol Festival in Holland, the Uovo Festival in Milan, the Fundaçao Serralves de Porto, the International Theater Festival in Goteborg, Sweden, the Bollwerk in Freiburg, the Lieu Unique in Nantes, and the IRCAM in Paris, among others.

At age 30, I decided to direct the film Season 1 episode 2 which was projected in my presence at the Centre Georges Pompidou, the MK2 Bibliothèque cinema in Paris, after being invited by the Cahiers du Cinéma, the Printemps de Septembre Festival in Toulouse, the Mac/Val art space in Vitry-sur-Seine, the Arsenic in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Festival du Film de Femmes in Créteil, France. The English version has been performed at the Stukteater in Leuven, Belgium.

To this day, I still do not have my driver's license."
