Directors Graeme Thomson and Silvia Maglioni transform Un Amour d'UIQ, science-fiction film written (but unmade) by Felix Guattari, in a single “seeance” of collective hypnosis. It will expand the territory of the 'body' of this film without filming a single shot, through a molecular vision of image, sound, language and gestures. Fragments of this seeance, along with voices recorded during previous sessions, will be recomposed into a polyphonic soundwork for the exhibition coming next Februrary in London at The Showroom.
In relation with their exhibition developed for The Showroom in London which will open in February 2015, Silvia Maglioni and Graeme Thomson wish to open in Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers a discussion space on the screenplay of the science-fiction film Un Amour d’UIQ, written by Felix Guattari but never shot: A script that the two artists consider as an unstable potential entity whose being and becoming has to be envisioned through an ongoing process of translation and transduction.
In Guattari’s original script an invisible alien force from a parallel dimension – UIQ, the Universe Infra-Quark – makes contact with a group of humans and begins to desire a form for itself (a face, a body), in order to communicate with the world of its hosts, but never succeeds. During the hypnosis seeance proposed in Les Laboratoires, participants are invited to imagine what it might be like to be affected by an entity like UIQ, in such a way that the encounter expands not only the film’s but our own potential.
This seeance, which spread the encounter with l’UIQ all over the film, follows others already elaborated in several venues around Europe and the USA. It will be used to enrich a polyphonic soundwork for the production of a film without image, a 'film of visions', created by the squatter community who have gathered around Guattari’s script. The soundwork will take place in The Showroom in London next February, as a first step towards this project. Another session will follow to develop other ideas and work protocols that Silvia Maglioni and Graeme Thomson will experiment in Les Laboratoires between September 2015 and June 2016.
