The Psychotropification of society,
An introduction by Dora García, Alexandra Baudelot et Mathilde Villeneuve
A Presentation of the fourth edition of Le Printemps des Laboratoires — a problematic tied in part to Dora García’s artistic practice, especially her ongoing Mad Marginal project which she began in 2009, and Le Café des Voix project (The Hearing Voices Café), a temporary café set up especially for this occasion, which will be running from 30 May to 3 June at the Pas si loin café in Pantin (in the Greater Paris region).
A long-awaited democratic psychotherapy..., by Tobie Nathan
« Envisioning psychotherapy for an open, multiple, polyglot and polytheistic world. Considering therapies from Africa, Asia and elsewhere with the same dignity as our Western therapies. Accepting to learn techniques from remote worlds and from worlds yet to emerge —thus is ethnopsychiatry’s programme, in a nutshell…
I set up the first ethnopsychiatry clinic in 1980, at the Avicenne hospital in Bobigny, receiving patients from Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, in their own languages and according to the logics particular to their worlds. From the very beginning, translators, mediators and researchers were part of the clinic’s structure. I strove to make the world of psychotherapy a forum, an open space of contradictory debate. Ever since, I have been receiving whoever turns to me and offering a structure that provides the patient with representatives, interpreters, witnesses of their cultural background and the hope of being able to draw on their own sources and resources. This is the very least we should be demanding of psychotherapy if it is to satisfy society’s democratic ideals ».
Caring for/ treating institutions: “presences proches” (close presences), reinventing care homes and institutions
« Deligny named “presences proches” (close presences) the adult caregivers supporting children with autism in the community he set up in the Cévennes in 1967. What is a close presence? Close to what? Today, we can no doubt apprehend Deligny’s experiment as an institutional invention as much as a leap into the unknown (Rimbaud) ». Jean-François Chevrier
This round-table discussion will be investigating the way in which, since the 1950s in France, certain therapeutic experiments were conducted at the margins of traditional institutions in order to create new forms of support adapted to the particular pathologies and the background of the individuals concerned. We will be focusing our discussion on the Cévennes community set up by Deligny, the Centre Georges Devereux founded by Tobie Nathan, the Centre Universitaire d’Aide Psychologique for migrant families and its research centre where, among other things, the ethnopsychiatric clinic was created, and the La Borde clinic founded by Jean Oury, in order to reflect on how the question of “close presences” was apprehended and practiced among the different members of these communities and institutions.
With Jean-François Chevrier, Florent Gabarron-Garcia et Tobie Nathan.

GRANDE SALLE - A performative lecture by Dingdingdong with Anne Collod, Emilie Hermant, Valérie Pihet (founding members)
This performative lecture will explain the founding and the various projects of dingdingdong — an Institute for the coproduction of knowledge on Huntington’s disease, a rare neurodegenerative genetic disorder with no known cure to date. Dingdingdong brings together artists, researchers and individuals directly affected by the disease; its objective is to create novel forms of collaboration in order to carry out its missions: exploring the disease as an unknown planet, learning from its metamorphoses, and, as we go, letting our practices take some lessons from the school — or rather the anti-school — of Huntington.
4 pm
PETITE SALLE - Political enquiries and accounts of experimentations; discussing the Cahiers d’enquêtes politiques (vivre, experimenter, raconter) [Political enquiry notes (living, experimenting, recounting)]
« These Cahiers d’enquêtes politiques bring together accounts of experimentations, and texts that follow on from them. They deal with science-fiction and the Renaissance, May 68 and workers’ enquiries, with care and squatting practices, with communities clinging on to life, collective gardens, industrial ruins, with hacking and hacked machines. A host of singular enquiries that each time explore collective modes of action and ways of passing on experiences. These texts are an invitation to create passages between different worlds, to create new situations that the political can emerge from. These Cahiers are not a programme but rather an invitation on a journey. »
With Josep Rafanell i Orra (moderator), Rémi Eliçabe, Amandine Guibert et François Thoreau.
GRANDE SALLE - Auprès du Naufrage, by Silvia Maglioni et Graeme Thomson
For this presentation the artists will be taking as there point of departure a recent experiment with what they refer to as a “shipwrecked film”, Disappear One, which for the most part was shot during a transatlantic journey, with the participation of the research group Presque Ruines, and the Brazilian theatre company Ueinzz which has been engaged for 20 years in a schizoscenic project, i.e., “ongoing drama rehearsals apprehended as a form of therapy”. Through a montage of images, sounds and texts, the artists will be presenting a reflection on the idea of inhabiting an existential shipwreck of subjectivity and sociability , as well as the possibility of seizing collapse and exhaustion as a potential space. A desert island, a space of invention and renewal where the castaway can build and foster the conditions for better forms of life in the face of the ever growing tyranny of normative well-being.
6 pm
PETITE SALLE - Care practices and collective formations: the question of self-support and mutual aid between individuals affected by singular disorders
« Collectively asserting new modes of existence for experiences hitherto classified as abnormal or pathological: this is the risky challenge that numerous groups have been undertaking. We know that it is not enough to simply denounce “repressive” institutions, nor to settle into the comfortable position of critique without consequence. We need to also be prepared to accept a certain level of indetermination that protects us from overarching forms of knowledge and enables us to attend to the emergence of new collective experiences, whether we desert institutions, stay at their margins, or whether we ‘squat’ them in order to subvert them. All these tactics are invariably grounded in the notion that we need to trust the possibility of collective creation ».
With Josep Rafanell i Orra (moderator), Jean-Marc Dupaz, Magali Molinié, Pticarus et Alexandre Vaillant.
GRANDE SALLE - Therapeutic Townhall Meeting: heal the museum by Grace Ndiritu
Therapeutic Townhall Meeting is a shaminic performance during which Grace Ndiritu invits participants to take part in A Therapeutic Townhall Meeting. Inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) meetings which took place in South Africa, which were broadcast on live television as series of 96 episodes beginning in 1996 at the end of apartheid. For the fourth edition of Printemps des Laboratoires, Ndiritu will use the shamanic tool of soul retrieval within the context of a large public forum, in which a discussion about the rise of mental illness in society and the normalization of antidepressant medication has taken place earlier in the day. By allowing both actors (victims) and spectators (persecutors) to meet each other on an equal platform, a normally polarized and politically charged dynamic between the two groups is nullified and a balance of power achieved, putting society rather than individuals, on trial.
The performance will be given in English. Each participant will be given a protocol to be followed during the performance.
